Resolute Gills pick up deserved 3 points
I really think Plymouth looked a poor outfit and think the way they took the 3 points in the first game did not really reflect the quality of both sides. I think Plymouth were the second worst side at Priestfield this season, behind Rotherham.
The goal by Crofts was a well worked free-kick when the Plymouth defence went to sleep. Well put away Crofty! He seemed to have a free header in the centre of the area.
I think Hessenthaler put in a very controlled performance and deserved his ovation when he was subbed. In contrast to this Byfield had a complete mare. The caution he earned was totally stupid. If you decide to stand in front of a free kick and jump up and down when it is about to be taken you deserve all you get. He looked totally lost today.
The Plymouth centre back, number 5 (Coughlan), looked totally out of his depth today. He failed to win 90% of his tackles. Is he a squad player that has been drafted in? I think Mickey Evans looked like a clever player today. He won the ball well and played some good passes. A quality act. I would trade him for Iwan Roberts any day - would you? I also think Friio looked a good player to. He played some telling passes.
The tackle by Connolly on Byfield was x-rated and I hope he is proud of it. The 3 match suspension he will receive will give him a chance to think about it. Connolly had spent a lot of the afternoon moaning and generally making a nuisance of himself.
I have definitely changed my mind about Darius Henderson - I would put him in the team now week in week out instead of Sidibe. This guy busts a gut trying to get into good positions.
I think Plymouth will slip further and will end up fighting for their lives. Will they survive - probably. Watch out Plymouth - you're finally finding your true place in the league.
Gills Man of the Match: Steve Banks
Banks made 1 excellent save in the first half and two good saves in the second. I think he kept us in the match - even though I do prefer Brown between the sticks.
Match Rating:
8/10
Referee Watch:
Referee Singh's card count this season suggested he used them a lot and he did end up showing a few - but they were all justified.
